COLIC PREVENTION: In cold weather supply warmed drinking water since horses often become impacted from not drinking enough water. Feed warm, very wet bran mashes often - here in the Southwest this also adds needed Phosphorus - once or twice a week will aid gut motility. A monthly pint of mineral oil added to a mash aids constipation (don't feed mineral oil often, it will interfere with absorption of fat soluble vitamins). Monthly feeding of psyllium husk will move sand out of the digestive tract (it lodges in the Cecum on the right side) and feeding in containers helps. Feed low, in a natural position for the horse. Probiotic supplementation is a proven colic preventative because it increases the efficiency of the digestive tract and reduces the buildup of gas. Exercise is a digestive aid. DO NOT CHANGE THE HORSE'S DIET SUDDENLY. Watch for changes in fecal consistency and adjust accordingly. Keep the gut free of parasites! A colicy horse finds relief from having the ears pulled, gentle massage of the belly and head/neck and/or gentle walking. Because the horse cannot vomit, everything eaten has to pass all the way through. Colic is an emergency needing Veterinary advice/care.
